Could they not be skimmed on a lathe?

They don't make them like that any more, once upon a time they would have had enough meat on to skim them but its largely not done any more.

The main problem with skimming is that you can run out of adjustment with the brake mechanism which is going to give you brake fade as the drum heats up leading to next to no brakes just when you need them most.

The other factor is expediency. If you are in no rush dropping them in at an engineers whilst passing for him to do at his leisure is as cheap as you can get.

If on the other hand you have to send a man to drop them off and say "I want them back by the end of play" you are in a different price league. Commercial garages are often reluctant spend a punters money that way

Delivery of new parts from a motor factors is just a phone call away and if there are any come backs they just return the part to the factor whereas if its something you had modified (skimmed) the buck stops with the garage

Its a combination of expedience design and ass covering

Ohh sorry I spoke! No need for such a flippant reply. If I had bought a van and it was as new as that then I would be taking it up with the manufacturer as they should not be corroding as quick as that. That's my opinion anyway.

No flippancy intended, more of a comment on the standard of service expected of commercial motor dealers.

The reply I would expect to get to such a claim would be along the lines of harsh winter road conditions, salt spray, not getting washed off properly, left standing for long periods etc etc long story short its not our fault we're not paying.
