Summer limb/branch drop

Had a pretty sizeable limb come off a beech in one of our parks a couple of weeks back.

It had some black residue above the union.

Was this a factor in the failing?

I'd imagine the black residue is likely to be a symptom of a bark inclusion (which is possibly the primary reason for failure as it indicates a biomechanical weakness) and the staining is probably just where water and air have ingress into the gap between that union.

Looked at a whipping willow Wednesday evening which had dropped a limb in the afternoon in to a moat look at rest of tree and all looked ok and said I would be back Friday to clear it up. Got a text the next morning to say another limb had got a split which was over moat so not a danger to anyone but when I got there Friday morning there was another over parking area. Differently the right weather for it.

I’ve seen this happen four times. ( Summer Branch Drop ).

And each time the branch was horizontal south facing and exposed to direct sunlight.

maybe something to look out for.

Interesting, I will take note of the aspect nextime I see it happen
