Monster 7ft Yew and what host?

Was in a customers garden today doing the hedges and wandered over to this old veteran of a tree.

what are these brackets and what does it mean long term for the tree.

I can't comment on the brackets, but bloody hell that is one impressive tree!

 

Needs to be on the Ancient tree register as I can't see it being less than 800-1000 years old.

Jon, as far as I am aware it is. I dated it to around 1200. will dig my book out and see if I can find it. it has a tpo, which is surprising as its in the middle of nowhere!!!

 

was hoping it needs to be felled. then I can mill it with the 090

The highest one looks like laetiporus sulphureus, a parasitic brown rotter. But I'm not too sure.

 

I did look to where you were located cos I thought that tree must be in Australia or the U.S.A. I don't think I've even seen a photo of a yew that big.

it will be worthless milled, much higher value as a living ancient tree

Definitely laetiporous (chicken of the woods), not likely to be of concern on a yew. And definitely get it ATF registered, what a tree!
