Why is this Elm dying? the tree is down to be dead wooded! i suspect it mite be past that though. no signs of decay that i can see, theres only a few green leaves on it and most of them have shriveled up and died. i think there mite of been a lot of soil compaction / possible excavations around it when the new car park was built! could this be the only explanation?

i was going to say it was ded. but can not see any sign of the bark coming off which is i assume norm for ded. has it any bark missing with grey streaks running down. it may be they have damaged root system so it not getting any nutrients. are the branches brittle. it may be shock and its gone into hibernation early. keep a eye on it and see if it comes out next year if not then you have some very good firewood.

Looks like a big tree for DED. Would have expected it to have succumbed long before now.

I agree with the above.

See what happens next year.

And it will make cracking firewood.
