Woodchip for mulch = Nutrient Robber?

I was told recently that fresh woodchip placed around the base of a tree actually has the reverse effect from allowing nutrients back into the soil and actually robs nutrients from the soil.

Am i right in understanding that it must be left to settle for a few weeks/Months before being used in such a fashion?

Many thanks

Surely the nutrients robbed would be equal to or less than that lost to competition if the chips were not applied and you weren't weeding? Only an assumption and you know what they say about them

You're probably right.

A layer of fresh mulch maybe better than none at all?

I chucked about 4 or 5 inches of green chip on one of my beds for two winters running and no ill effects, everything grew like buggery

She'd loads of what looked suspiciously like honey fungus though
