Yellow buckeye just about holding on to life.

Buds forming on the remaining cambial tissue and what's left of the graft is sending down an aerial root.

Love those new roots!

Why is so much soil on the stem?

Not one of my trees Guy, but it's on a lower section of a slope in sandy soil so may get accumulation of erosion soil from above.

How do those witches broom's form David?Ive seen them on hemlock and fir here.

Sorry Adam, just saw this.

Can be a number of different things.

Bacteria, fungi, insects

The buds hormones get interfered with by the above, and can cause the multiple bud/twig proliferation, instead of the normal single growth.

Coppiced woodland Jake?

.

Potentially as there are a lot of hazel and field maple as understorey. Mainly old oak as the canopy. If it used to be coppiced it hasn't for a long time. A small Brook that can overflow slightly undermined this tree and probably put to much pressure on the single tension root that had significant white rot.

This is a rather puzzling cherry stem. At first sight I thought it loked like a basal graft and another graft at 2m. But close up it doesn't look like grafts. Anyone got any ideas what's going on?
