You can now get purpose-built bolt-on portal kits for Defenders from Tibus off-road in Germany. Not cheap, but top quality and much more satisfactory than Mog or Volvo portals on a Defender.

 

Wanted some for my 110 but SWMBO says "no", reckons she won't be able to climb in!

I just had a gander at tibus off road and they look a very good product. I would love to build my own Arb landy that had them on and could carry more weight, it could be the best of mog vs landy, mog use ability but on landy size. Propper wet dream stuff.

We are currently building a buggy (Landymog) and have used Unimog portals welded on to Land Rover axles. The worst part was getting the half shafts made to fit from the diff to the drop boxes.

I don't get this?

 

Isn't the whole point of portal axels to increase ground clearance? but the way those are attached has not increase ground clearance at all:confused1:

Your right skyhook, you dont get it, if you look closely next to each spring is a hydraulic ram which are controlled from the cab, you can push them out to give you the clearance you need, as the rams go out the width of the truck comes in, you will be able to lift one wheel off the floor if you wish or when on a side slope push the two downward rams out to keep the truck level.

 

The pic you see is with no pressure on the rams and therefore the truck sitting low, a bit like the motorway button on a Range Rover, better for speed.

Looks amazing! Don't the hydraulic rams prevent the shocks and springs from working though? Or am I missing something very obvious?..
