alright guys,

Ive got a pedestrianised rayco stump grinder with honda engine, having a few problems with it. Starts fine, warms up well but when throttle is activated ready for grinding the engine splutters and coughs when grinding the stump. does this for a while. doesnt cut out but shown loss of power. then works as normal.

machine is warmed up for a good 5mins before grinding starts so pretty sure its not that. could it be air filter problem?

any help would be greatly appreciated!

thanks

tom

Hello The Captain, take the air filter off first and give a good clean out as they get clogged with dust particulates really quick, also check that there is enough tension on the throttle cable, as if it is slack the throttle will not open fully, check the oil as a matter of course, and check the tension on your drive belts. Probably a silly question but previously I have tried to use mine with the choke on without realising to switch it back. Hope this helps if you haven't tried this already.

thanks for the reply Kenty, Have tried all those things you mentioned, cleaned air filter, its about 4 years old but clean, worth replacing you think?

also checked throttle cable, seems tensioned, as are drive belts, oil seems fine.

Thing is it struggles for a few mins then works just fine after. Would just leave it but if there is something wrong would rather have it sorted sooner rather than later

If the temperature is low, between 0-8 C° it can be carburetor ice. If the inlet manifold is cold like ice (actually sometimes there is ice on the outside of the manifold) the problem can be solved with some alcohol additive sold on all gas stations. My old Rayco 1620 had a lot of problems with it, and i always had a can with carburetor alcohol (translated from danish - not sure if it is the right word for it) with me.

we had a similar problem with our grinder and changing plugs was a temporary fix i ended up taking the head off and relapping the valves and resetting the valve clearances my thoughts were that the engine was lugging down due to lack of compression caused by leaky valves and it was sooting up the plugs causing a misfire/splutter flames shooting out the exhaust
