Just been talking to LANTRA about cross cutting and getting our sawhorse on the course and found out all the codes are changing! Looks like there are changes coming!

Had a panic when I saw the title as thought you had been quoted £972 to do a cs30 course, prob going to change everything so the qualifications only lasts a few years so you have to refresh or not hold a ticket!

Grandfathers rights apply if you ve got them you dont need to do the new ones! Spoke to an assessor last week about it.

Sorry to throw a spanner in the works, but my ticket from 92 is different numbers again, and I was told by some local authority pen pusher that I cannot work on council land unless I do cs 30. Nothing has changed on the course. Since city a guilds have told me that he is wrong, and the tickets have no expiry date, then mine is in fact valid. However, upon doing some in depth investigatiins, and pulling a few favours, everyone working within the local authority industry will need to update to the new qualification, regardless of when they took the original test. Its just a big con to get more money out of everyone

DVLa don't make us take a driving test ever 3 or 5 years , yet lots of work based accidents are vehicle related...

The principle that my apprenticeship was based on was that college gave you a basic idea of the principles of your trade and you learnt best practice and honed your skills at work from a mentor... This now seems obsolete when it comes to some institutions and organisations... A green horn straight out of college with the up to date tickets is deemed more competent than a mastercraftman who has honed their skills in their trade for years...

 

I keep a CPD record and keep up to date with best practice attend industry seminars demonstrations and related training.

Maybe a CPD submission and a declaration from a employer or mentor would be a better way of maintaining our industry qualifications.. With a basic administration fee per year to maintain your qualifications and skill competence base...

Do you meen directly employee off a council or as a contractor?

Its already common practice for a lot off council's to send thear staff on refresher days as it covers them incase off accident but for a private company to do this for every member off staff would push up cost unbarabuly and push us out of being as competative and just leave it open for the likes of enterprise, tillhill etc.

I can understand doing refresher day on things like arial rescue and 1st aid, the things that are not done every day but to sit and be told how to refit a bar and chain and cross cut a log would just be insulting to most professional arborists

Mark, sounds like a common sense and logical approach, however, common sense and logic dont seem to have any place in the modern world. Whether we like it or not everything is going toward refreshing tickets. This applies to virtually all industries these days it seems. If it has not affected you yet, it soon will. The hoards of pen-pushers have to be kept in gainful employment somehow.
