Rack saw

Sounds like I need to test it with a fergi pulley attached to my tractor. Tractor is 47hp when new so probably 35 Hp now.

I will look into the fire hose for a belt.

Video which agrimog put up of traction engines running rack saws with a crossed belt. Is this just because of the length to the traction engine as I am more used to running a circular saw without the belt being crossed.

crossed belts change the direction of rotation so they rotate one clockwise and the other anticlockwise

We normally cross thebelts when running the benches as it helps to keep the belts on as they are normally quite long the wind can get hold of them and cause them to move about. My mate has got a stenner that takes a 6ft blade and cut a stick up to 24ft in length.

What tractor are you planning to run it off? You mention about 47hp new so I'm guessing a 135, if so this should be fine to run a 42 inch blade on your saw. I don't think the gearing woe be right if run off a fergi pulley though as its a bit on the small side....

hi john

the mill pictured is not running yet. i hold the log in place by hand, theres room between the gaurds. will post some photos

the mill will be highly modified so it works like a frick sawmill with no need to hold the log

search frick sawmill on youtube

how can a mill be run with low hp?

looking at my mills and others alike you need at least 100hp or a frick needs up to 238hp. i have seen a frick mill powerd by 160hp and thats under powered

Just trying to attach the fergie pulley to the rack saw. Anybody have an idea of the minimum length of belt required to operate the drive and idler pulley as I want to mount the fergie pulley at a set point then use a pto shaft to allow easy attachment to the tractor. Also anyone have a source for 6 inch flat belting.
