Climbing Wellies

learn how to use a throw line :confused1: ? haha if that fails just chuck your rope over the branches and haul ya way up ddrt mate, no point in fluffing around with that system , sounds tedious.

personally i would set a line up top and srt it and if i needed to climb higher then my ascent line just ddrt it from there

The problem I had with alternating my ropes ddrt was the downwards curve of the branches kept causing my line to slide away from the trunk out towards the tips.

Once I'd got up there I had a whale of a time!

You're right though, I could do with practicing with my throwline.

Marcus, I won't be able to get down to the 3atc, but its a shame, I could do with getting some skill!!

I had a few 'big' ones last year and seem to remember this also. I think I went down a similar route to your technique aswell, a little improvising was definitely needed.

Even with an access line going up the first 20/30m there was still alot of climbing involved in some of those. As you say too though, beautiful trees once you get to work in em. Pretty brittle, but stunning none the less...

Had the same problem with a cedar on Thursday, but wasn't risking a throwline to height because of power cables not that far away..

Ended up alternating climbing line and lanyard part way around the tree and leaning away from each to stop the rope sliding off. Slow and tedious. Once i got to height I was even more glad I hadn't thrown in, as the branches were brittle as hell and wouldn't have taken my weight for long.
