Newbie Question - rocking the saw...

Hi everyone - brand new to the world of arboriculture and have many more questions than answers..! Here's question 1..

When using the saw is it ok to rock the saw back/forth, either with the bumper spikes or without, or should I be keeping the saw straight and flat..?

I've been told that the rocking motion is taking more of my energy and takes more time to cut the wood... can't see it myself though..? The rocking motion seems almost a natural movement, especially using the bumper spikes...

Every/Any comments appreciated!

Adam

nothing wrong with pivoting off the dogs (thats what they are for)..

however, it will make it difficult to keep the saw in the power-band if its being moved about the cut like a see-saw, and rocking a saw up and down has far more potential for you to lose track of the bar-tip and experience kickback, plus you will look like a farmer/builder/newbie/muppet

As others have said the spikes/dawgs are for just that . Bit the dawgs into the wood and pivot the saw keeping the revs at optimum cutting speed . Don't let it scream but don't lean so hard as to bog it down . You can " feel " when its working its best .
