I look at this beech today , it has some old damage on the lower trunk & some bark cracks , it's a good size with lean towards the road , going to get it scanned to get a picture of any decay , some fungi was noted on root area but none present at the minute ... Any opinions / past cases of similar examples .. Thanks John

looks like something may have tried eating the bark (deer?) but im no expert on this subject.

if you do end up felling it i would be interested in the timber.

Wait for then scan. Looks nothing more than damage from a while ago and the tree has put some reaction wood around the wounds... callus...

See what scan says due to no fungi present

Excuse the pun when I say I'm going out on a limb here but it looks very much like a vehicle or similar has struck the trunk at some point and torn the bark off

Whats the crown condition like?

Crown seems ok , it's got a good stem but with a high crown , no lower limbs , didn't see any die back , but sticking point is its a nice tree but with all that weight leaning over the road the roots & truck will need to be found to be sound otherwise it's days will be numbered just on the risk factor , the cracking & colour difference on the trunk is worrying ,
