Jensen 528i gearbox

Ok, the bearings, I think, are ok. It's the cogs I'm worried about, getting a price from the dealer soon, if they have any but I'm thinking the easiest and cheapest fix would be a complete gearbox from a retired machine?

Well that's one way to go but why would the machine be retired and would you want a gearbox from a machine that's got enough hours on it to get to the moon and back?

From what I have heard the gearbox's (if kept oiled) are pretty much bomb proof, which I figure means if a machine is not working any more then I should get a good gear box out of it. I only found out yesterday so haven't had much time to think of all the routes.

I'm not a mechanic so just went with my first thought. Have you had experience getting gears reverse engineered? There are companies nearby that do this (just googled it) but I have no idea on costs etc

I've put oil in it now, it was bone dry.

From the way it was behaving i think it's missing a tooth now, maybe two and when the rollers change direction in the region of the missing teeth it slips albeit briefly.

Thing is there are no signs of leakage or ever have been so the only thing i can think of is that when i bought it i had a full v.expensive service and maybe the guy forgot to refill the oil. I've been doing the engine/hydraulic service and changing the blades periodically but didn't know about the gearbox.

This means it has done 300 hrs with no oil in the gearbox...

I've looked at one on an a340 that was in bits. It's made by Rögelberg Getriebe GmbH & Co. KG but I cannot trace the part number online so I suspect its a special for Jensen and I imagine the one from a 528 is similar in this respect.

well I opened it up and the top two cogs look ok-there isn't much room to see mind.

I was expecting to find dust! So I'm hoping It's just going to be the bearings (not sure if that's good or not....)

Its usually the bearings that go first
