Hi Darrin and welcome.

 

I don't know why you would want the friction up the tree rather than on the ground? Do really light pieces not just hang up?

 

It's easier for a groundie to walk ten feet than a climber to ascend ten feet, yah?

 

Mark, I have used a fig 8 in the tree too but as a mid line addition to friction when I have self lowered to otherwise free up a groundy or not had the luxury of a clued up groundy on the end of the line.

 

I too can't see the advantage of all that friction at a top point but maybe I'm missing somthing.

Mark, just making the point that you don't always need a lowering rope that's more than twice the height of the job. It seems like another handy trick that could sometimes make life easier. Tie a suitable hitch round a light but tricky limb , put a bulky stopper knot in the other end of the rope and hey presto, a 50ft lower with a 55ft rope.
