To Pollard or not to pollard??

If you hatrack the tree, where you have cut one branch off you will get ten growing and they will grow extremely fast, before you know it you will have a crown exactly the same size but this time it will be ten times denser than it was before.

 

 

I know Dean!!!, its called a "Pollard"!!!:sneaky2::001_tongue::001_smile:

i personally like a good pollard that has been properly done and has been maintain well as in only taking back to the knuckle that has been formed. what i cant stand is the fact that some inspectors just feel that some trees need to be topped and it is topping not pollarding mandatory ie poplars,willows and limes yes i agree it does reduce the maintenance in the shot term but it does not in the long term. it leaves an ugly tree and usually means you have to come back yearly to remove epicormic regularly. a more subtle approach i feel would be is to reduce kinda heavily if needed and keep it up thus forming a neater tree or flop the poor thing and replace with a more suitable tree.
