Hi guys,

 

just come back from the pub so apologies for the late reply. I started the job yesterday (Wednesday). While I was up there I stuck a probe inside that cavity and basically it went in the length of my elbow. I write the specs for my own jobs so I’m very flexible! My head is saying (given the location of the tree) I should have taken more off! But it’s a nice tree, in a lovely location and I didn’t want to butcher it (even more than I had already)

 

Its not a perfect reduction by any means – Nothing was roped and I did catch a few on the way down – shattered like glass being Ash at this time of year, I was gutted I can tell you!

Ash. Not one of my favourites to red. Keep em coming john, always good to see other peoples work. Like to see how l/a's manage their trees. Used to work for Greenwich for a bit so good to see how it's done in other parts.

35 maybe...? I dont think it was 40%

Looks like you did the best of a bad job, John.

The tree is lax in it's growth, and doesn't have alot of growth points to cut back to judging by the finished photo,

I thought that it was more than 30% by the photo.

A 25% reduction is not removing 1 in 4 branches, that's thinning. IMO

Does Polyporus sqamosa effect a trees vigour and health? I know its not ideal to remove a tree energy reserve or energy producing foliage when it is invaded by a pathogeon, sometimes needs must. The reduction looks fine to me as a safety prune and retains the tree for a few more years to come.

 

Not to criticise those who post opinions on certain reductions, but you have to consider the type of tree being reduced, Ash can be a bugger to get right out/up there and make the most ideal pruning targets, you sometime have to do what is practically possible as best you can.
