Balsam poplar is bloody lovely. Real honeyish. Leaves smell strong as well when they first burst

for me I am most fond of Juniperus, our Eastern Red Cedar. juniperus virginiana is gorgeous.

In the fire, its smokey aroma is absolutely intoxicating.

I like the smell of Scots pine. 

And yesterday while  deadwooding one and enjoying the smell I thought  I recognised a antiseptic smell , is this possible.

It's what turps is made from, which is pretty damn antiseptic I'd say. I'd say you were not imagining it. Also love the smell. More than I like "pine fresh" toilet cleaner like

green woods obviously smell different to dry timber as most dry timber smells ok but some wet woods like oak and robinia smell like rats piss.

 

the nicest wood in the world by a country mile is lignum vitae and it's so fantastic that the shavings and dust were sold to manufacturers of ladies perfume.

Best smelling wood shavings i’ve experienced was from a Oak whiskey barrel.
