Repainting a stihl?

Made me think of this.

“The test of the machine is the satisfaction it gives you. There isn't any other test. If the machine produces tranquility it's right. If it disturbs you it's wrong until either the machine or your mind is changed.”

― Robert M. Pirsig, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: An Inquiry Into Values

I've spent hours re-painting old mowers in odd colours - the interesting thing I've found , like cleaning kit, is that it forces you to really look at what you're re-painting / cleaning - that can only be a good thing IMO.

Personally I like the home made blue. Armani blue would be the same as stihl orange - an advertisement.

I agree :)

Having the saw standard makes it another saw. Painting it makes it MY saw!

Nothing wrong with customising what you own! So I don't see why it rubbed people the wrong way. It's only a bit of bloody paint!

I might do mine again in orange but is the stihl orange or husky orange better?

Personally I like the old Stihl red and grey colour scheme, particularly in the days when the dogs were also painted red. A nice retro look for your MS whatever.

Stihl orange for put put put putter put put............................................... .................................................. .................................................. ........put......................

Geoff - are you describing a Stihl or an Allen Scythe?

I've been told by more than one person that painting your saws a livid colour makes them less attractive to the thieves.

I was thinking about doing mine; I would rather not but it's another deterrent.

Stupid thing is ive got a 1985 husky which looks almost as good as new, the plastics haven't faded, the paint doesn't chip yet the newer saws are just disposable like newer cars.

Can quite easily say the 044 has more paint missing off the crankcases than what its actually got left on it. My 357xp has turned into about 4 different shades of orange/red. Clearly the newer saws are built out of inferior materials.

I have never really understood that, they go to all the trouble to break into premises then a container and when they see some paint on a saw they don't take it! I think they'll snaffle it by torchlight anyway.
