zig zag failure?

Just had a thought, what if you had two climbers at about 100kg, one rescuing the other, total non-dynamic load 2kN. In a rescue situation, descents can be jerky at best and you may have to pull the victim off or over a branch, easily adding another 2kN. So where does that leave you with safety factors? 15kN/4kN= safety factor of 3.75, not great.

I don't have a zigzag, unlikely to be getting one, but if I did I would be worried about using one for rescue.

Sure, you might consider reitiring the kit after the rescue because you had used it beyond its SWL but it would still be far enough away from MBS to carry out the rescue. This goes for all kit. And same for rigging too, if you push the limits and go over SWL you will surely get away with it but the kit might have to be retired early. Its called cycles to failure, where going over the SWL can recuce the MBS over time causing eventual failure below MBS. As a one off though, just get on rescue the person!

Facts, not supposition. Nice to see Petzl's response.

I've found that after work around a tree, the zigzag upper carabiner has become cross-loaded. Re-orientated it and worked on or descended when finished.

So, ordering a couple of the little rubbers to see if they will keep the upper krab properly orientated. And no YouTube, awe-inspiring fast descents.

I looked at the mini strop setup, but wonder what the jagged edge would do to that with the forces involved?
