Hi Guys, I can get hold of 3/8 chains for my ms660 at a very good price, problem is they're only 25" (84 links) and I'm needing them for a 36" bar (114 links). Whats to stop me buying a job lot, splitting the masterlinks on them, and adding another 30 links from another chain, ending up with two masterlinks per chain? that way, roughly for every three chains, i end up with 2 longer ones and a few links spare.

I have a splitter and spinner, can anyone tell me where to buy masterlinks?

Cheers in advance

Mike

I used to make my own loops with tie straps rivets etc . Got an Oregon riveter and spinner . It was always Oregon chain though . Could not get Stihl links and tie straps . Can't be arsed nowadays though !

Dead easy to do

We buy ours in 100ft reels and just cut and join back together.

You just need a chain breaker and a re riveter and spare tie straps.

Our local dealer does the same.

Where are you based

Thanks for the replies. Couldnt see it being a problem as long as the chain is rejoined correctly and to the correct tension. I'll order a handful of Stihl presets hopefully and make up some chains,

Bob, I'm near Elgin..

Nothing stopping you at all - just order in the joining links.

I had a local dealer tell me it was no longer policy to supply straps and rivets (you know how they get lost out of the bag and you need the odd one now and again) - not safe for him to let me make my own chain. Thought it was a nice way of him earning a bit more cash....
