I've tried all sorts of set ups over the years and I can highly recommend the knut, it grabs the rope straight away every time and seems to never lock up for me.

As steve as already said, the length of the cord makes a big difference when using a distel/Knut set up I experimented for ages using different cords. Putting a few twists in the cord as sugested by others also made a big difference. I still find my self using prussik for some situations though. I'm gonna try and get a rec climb sorted soon round this way (rec climb mid Devon) I'l post some info on the thread when I've got a location sorted.

I also use the Knut, but on my side strop , always works perfectly, as well as the wraps you put in the knot I'd also check the diameters of the main climbing rope versus the diameter of your friction cord, something you may already be aware of but thought worth mentioning
