Ash Barber chairs, been seeing a few recently?

Recommended Posts

Over the last tree weeks I have seen four Med sized ash trees Barber chair. One of these has been with me and the rest with others I have been working with.

Today or example, maybe a 15m tall tree, 12" diameter being felled to make a ride wider. Nice gob, hinge 2.5 - 3 cm hinge. Pretty well balanced tree so could sit like that fine. Gave it a push on my own with out a felling lever and it just barber chaired! All fine and not a huge one, maybe 1.5m, but still, not what you want to see. The very same thing happened to some one else today.

Is this some thing to do with sap rising at this time of year? Making ash even more sensitive?

I have had a reasonable amount of experience with felling for the last 6 or so years, small and large tree qualified. At the end of the day it comes down to the operator and if in that example I was to cut an extra cm then maybe it would not have happened but it does seem super easy to do. Very fine balance if you want to keep a nice hinge there!

Just a heads up and reminder, Keep safe out there . . .

one thing i noticed was make sure your back cut isnt to high in relation to base of gob cut, this can lead to it spliting up instaed of the hindge folding.

Not a nice event to happen, especially on a straght even tree you expect it to just go over.

As has been said, bore through the hinge to reduce the stress and make sure your to the side of the tree when finishing the felling cut.....

One of the local log suppliers was felling some Ash last week, he had one barbers chair on him and now he has quite a few bolts, screws and plate holding his leg together..... Take care out there people

The gob is just one factor. But these should be right anyway. Advantage of a Danish pie cut is you take out the problem timber and it will hold for you to push it over.
