Jules, here's the comparison.

Like I said, its for an article so I don't want to go into to much detail at this point.

.

OK, save the punchline! For now I am thinking 20 + or - 10 for soft rot, 25 + or - 5 for 'functional'.

10 out of 10 for careful dismantle, not so many out of 10 for cutting out the only good strap of wood on the compression side to take the bollard for shock loading?

a previously posted beech that failed mainly due to Kretz but Ganoderma was also partially involved, I'm reposting as we've just taken a slice off it to look at the decay patterns.

Remarkable plating between the different colonies of the Kretz.

Secretarb, you say you monitored the beech for years, what made you decide to fell it? Crown condition? Sounding on the stem? Picus test? Cheers

the fungus was first detected 10 years ago by my boss and with the location of the tree being near a regularly used footpath, it was time for the tree to come down.

cheers, it was discussed about tying the bollard onto the tree next to it with a redirect on the beech stem but i decided it would be ok to take a thin slither out of the compression side. Good to see others think about this kind of thing too.
