I broke chain on my top handle saw when a twig caught it and took it off the bar.

I need to replace it and it got me wondering what chain gives best compromise all round ?

Its only a 10" bar.

I've bought two chains to try but was hoping for a few expert opinions!

Not much an expert on what chain is best but.

Some people have said semi chisel as if you hit something it will keep cutting through. Others have said full chisel on top handle but unless its been modded it will lack some power in a bigger cut.

Just what I've picked up talking to various climbers and assessor s about the top handle saws.

As a shameless self promotion :blushing: but this is really what my website aims to help tell people - what chains are available and how they differ.

Put you chainsaw and bar length in here Chains and it will tell you the chains on offer. If you have a 10" bar it looks like it's the 1.1mm or .043 guage chain you are after so only really a couple of options.

If you want to know more about the chains then have a look here http://www.chainsawbars.co.uk/media/documents/chain-info.pdf and there is more details on each one.

It's a pdf, takes a while to download and I'd love to have it hosted online but that's not possible at the mo...

I love new stihl full chisel chain, up a tree is one of the few places where your not likely to hit a nail or any crap.

Have you never hit a old bird nest by mistake? I've found wire n rocks in em!

Its a 1.3mm 050 guage that is on it at the moment, but i bought a 1.1mm 043 bar and chain just to see what difference it would make.

Its a chinese saw, same as AMA top handle.

If you count the drive links you can pick any chain here Custom chain loops

If you're not sure which part are the drive links they are the bits that sit inside the bar... and there are links on the above page to help ID the chain you have,
