my 254 was great, my many 262's were more productive though.

 

now a new 346 ( 50cc one)will run rings round the 254. I proved this 2 weeks ago while snedding 2m cube douglas firs. The ( very skilled ) bloke with the 046 stihl couldnt keep up.

Small hardwood thinning; the 254XP was handier than my 036, the square section back handle (absent on the 357) made flicking the saw about in the brash easier. Poor connection between throttle trigger and carb did my head in tho - throttle response on the Stihl was instant.

My main issue with my 254 is the chain brake..it's very easy to flick it on when it's not needed. If I pull it off, then just let go, it will drop back on again through momentum of the handle. Is this normal, or is mine just a bit worn?

 

Other than that, it's a joy to use.

357xp i use one of those saws, not a bad saw
