The Art of Zig Zag

I've been hoping someone would try using velocity because zigzag info says its 11.5mm-13mm so thought I might have to get a new rope but I don't need to yet hopefully. Cheers. Just what I wanted to hear.

Yes, I was hoping it would be ok on velocity too. I'm using mine on poison ivy but was thinking that 11mm should be better. With possibly greater amount of sitback (the zig zags having to stretch out more to grip) which would be a good thing when on branch tips.

 

Used mine again today, all good, cant really fault it.

Can honestly say it does but that is with velocity I haven't tried with anything else.I'm really impressed with it, what may of helped it that on my sequoia I have fitted 25cm bridge which is the smallest you can get this makes the zig zag sit real close to my body which helps it to self tend better just like a sj.

Yeah had one for bout week, also think it is a great tool. very easy switch from hitch to ZZ. i use Tachyon 11.5mm with it. Self tends pretty good, not quite like SJ but alot better and safer than a hitch.

 

save energy as you dont have to hold with one hand on the rope whilst tending on ascending like a HC.

 

Couple issues i have is,

1. cant send a bight down for sending saw up or other gear. Like HC

2. when descending and the rope tails over a branch and then into ZZ, i find it creates a loop from back of pulley and rub against your hand as you descend, which makes it slightly harder to hold the top of ZZ.

3. the pulley would work better with long sides on the feed in, sometimes the rope flicks off and goes to the side of the pulley.

 

Couple pics would explain better, but on the whole its a great piece of kit and looking forward to spending more time on it. point to remember if you make it too short system, its not that good for balancing and running on branches. as your arm is bent and its better when its straighter for balance.

There is a way round issue 1. but not sure if its enough of an issue TBH.

 

You could install a fixe pulley below the ZZ. The cheeks of it would just sit either side of the karabiner that is attaching the ZZ to your harness. Then you could pull a bight from between the two pulleys and have your saw attached to that and sent up.

 

Two pulleys though, just to achieve that, not really worht it, although the choice of secon pulley might help with issue 3. I have notice that the rope flips out here easily.

Does anyone else use it without a splice on the attachment end? Just because I don't have a splice on either end of my rope so I have to climb on a Single Fisherman's Loop. Anyone have any tips to make the knot smaller?

I dont have spliced eyes on the rope im now currently using and just use a bowline. Just keeping it simple for me bud lol

You could tie a bowline with a long loop so that the knot part is up well away from the ZZ.
