Just to muddy the waters a bit:thumbup:..... a good tweak for a 200tdi is to throw a 300 tdi head on it...... only real way to know whats in her is to checkthe engine number.... send on the reg and ill tell you what should be in it...go to any decent garage.... they can run the reg and will tell you....

or else Decoding your Land Rover VIN Number

Easy peasy:thumbup:

Currently running crew cab td5 110 ,td5 disco 7 seater,130 defender 300tdi tipper, 84 rangy off roader...:thumbup1:not that i like landrovers or anything.....

Not always - I've seen an S reg Td5 and a V reg Tdi :001_tt2:

Also from memory landrover continued to fit 200's for a while after the changeover to 300's mostly for export and also thye built some 3 door discos after 96 when they were supposed to be discontinued and all be five doors, easiest way to spot a 300 is the constant squeaking from the serpentine belt when its running :laugh1:

Cheers, it's an S reg.

EGR will be dealt with appropriately...

Diff lock light used to work, then stayed on sometimes, now does not come on at all. Was mildly worried it was actuator operated and not working. I've been ploughing through some heavy clay with a heavy trailer and desperate for traction...

I think the issue here is the heavy clay and heavy trailer. When you get stuck in diff lock, look in mirrors and out the window (may need a passenger) to verify that you do indeed have one wheel at the front spinning and one wheel at the back spinning.

Without extra diff locks on the axles you won't have all four wheels spinning.

Hi, I use a defender 90 (it's not mine, I use it in winter, the owner in summer).

And was wondering about a few things...

How do I know wether it's a 200 or 300 tdi?

It has an EGR-valve, do these cause the same issues on a landrover as they do in many cars (coking up of inlet tracts following on from it, thus severely hampering airflow) and does simply disconnecting the plug on it leave it permanently shut?

How is the diff lock operated? And would the fact the light on the dash does not come on be indicative of diff issues or dash issues?

I know answers to these question could be found elsewhere but I know how many of you like your landy's.

Cheers, Daniel.

The diff lock light is served by a connection of two tiny wires on the transfer box. These may be broken or disconnected. Meaning you can select diff lock but it won't tell you!

It could just be a dodgy dash bulb too.

When you move the transfer box gearstick to the left to select diff lock it just moves a little lever to select it. As said before the linkage can come apart on these and is an easy fix.

Egr valve delete on a 300tdi does make a difference. It has on mine. Just need a plate to block it off at the middle of the hose that leads into the inlet manifold. The kit can be had on eBay for a couple of quid.

I'd get rid of the cat in the down pipe and do away with the centre silencer to! Erg valve blanking a must and tuning up the fuel pump to give more fuel when the turbo is not active (1800 revs) that what I have done to my disco1 300 tdi :)

Did the centre silencer make much difference noise wise? How does it do for the performance?

If you tweaked all of the pump correctly you'll see pre-turbo pickup a bit better. Do it as not set it matched with each component will see lots of black smoke = too much fuel. I get some pulling off quickly in first but ideally your looking for a bit of haze under full load acceleration. The pump tweak really brings the 300tdi to life.
