Thanks for the replies.

 

Well as a last ditch thing I took my old Protimeter apart to see if there was anything obviously wrong inside (I know nothing about electronics). I could see nothing so blew of any dust and put it back together and amazingly it works again. Also found the original calibration tester and it's still perfect. It may well be some sort of intermittent fault so could well be following up on one of your recommends in the near future.
