Looks like heterobasidium annosum, conifers are the main host.

Having now read up on this, it seems quite deadly towards conifers. This bracket is at the base of a fairly large and fairly old (seems to be about 150 years) Douglas fir, there are two of these on a small island next to a converted victorian greenhouse. 

 

I am guessing Picus would be a good way to know what the state is. There are no signs of any damage to the tree that I can see at all.
