The speedo on my Navara has stopped working . chances are its the electronic speed sensor somewhere on the transmission I am told . These are £105 + vat . Do I need a working speedo for the MOT ?

It is illegal to drive a vehicle on a public road without a correctly functioning speedometer.

 

However, speedometer function is not checked as a part of the M.O.T. test, so you can't fail an M.O.T. for it.

ok . thanks people . could you use the speed from your sat nav to make driving leagal ?

Oddly enough since Jan 2012 they do have to check the speedometer illumination and legibility but not as far as I am aware whether it works.

My transit passed with the tester bring aware as they can't test its functionality only that it looks like it works!
