No i don't deliver the dark side of norwich anymore! Sold the last two cube of hardwood yesterday and softwood flying off the shelf so to speak luckily have got some nice seasoned stacked chip stuff at the same price as i pay for standing hardwood.

 

Back to the thread first customer yesterday moaned that i was 15 mins early thought it was a joke then realised it wasn't, kept my cool, let him run on etc then told him we no longer had an appointment. Had saved the last two cube of hardwood for him for two weeks! Drove off with him frantically waving for me to stop. Have a waiting list for hardwood so quick call and off to someone grateful.

Needs to go up £5 a cube every year regardless. Fuel, cord and kit is going up massively every year without even looking at inflation.

 

Your right, and imo Steve I think punters prefer a small increase each yr then a bloody great increase say every 4 or 5 yrs

Don't let it get your back up, I get them ringing up, "how much is your wood?" They don't ask if its seasoned or what type of wood it is they just ask how much. To these I just tell them, " sorry I don't want to sell to you, goodbye!!"

 

From a customer's point-of-view, there's little point in asking if it's seasoned. because it always will be - even if it was felled last week and has been buried in a swamp since then.

 

And I wasn't aware that I could pick and choose what sort of wood I got.

From the customer's point of view, buying logs is all a bit of a lottery. A lot of suppliers declare their wood to be "seasoned" but don't give a moisture content for it. Also, how big is a bag? Suppliers i've looked at all say £/bag / builders' bag / tonne bag / van load / pick-up load etc. Weight or volume would be handier and make it a bit easier to have an inkling of what im actually getting. I've looked up suppliers in the yellow pages and had a really kind chap turn up with bags of logs saying that he'd given up supplying logs but Yellow Pages were still listing him so he'd come out anyway. I've also had logs delivered which turned out to be a builders bag of soaking wet poplar / willow which was total rubbish. I prefer to cut my own where i can get it but unfortunately i have very limited storage so cant store enough for the winter.

I think he is saying, as a customer, whenever he asks if the wood is seasoned that he is told it is, regardless of how dry it might be. In other words, not all of us in the log trade are as honest as we could be, just like the rest of the population.

You can't sell logs by weight, Oak weighs a lot more than other woods for a start.

 

I sell by volume and people still don't seem to grasp what 1m3 is. When they don't understand I usually just end up saying it's the same as 2 builders bags. Which it is.
