HI I'm fairly new to climbing,was taught drt with prusik hitches

I'm looking at trying the hitch climber and was wondering how you advance up the tree,with the way i was taught you anchor yourself with one end of the rope to the tree and throw the other end around the next limb above you and so on.

but i can't see how you can do this with a hitch climber .

hope this makes sense.

If you've got a longer haul up a tree, try this.

Spliced eye goes through the ring on your harness.

Attach a mini prussic and attach to the top crab

You can move the mini prussic up so you can pull directly under the pulley, this helps so you dont have to keep stopping and feeding the slack through.

Once you've got to the point clip in the lanyard and change the sliced eye to the top crab and lower crab on to the harness bridge /ring ImageUploadedByArbtalk1391883167.661328.jpg.fa218fa70ea4b27ad890d4d1327da91e.jpg

I've got a question about using the hitch climber.

I've been shown by some climbers to just attach the bottom crab to your harness directly and by others to have something like a prussik or tape loop connected between the bottom crab and your harness to give it some distance from your harness. i was wondering if one method is the correct one to use or is it down to personal preference?

Have a look through this Luke;

What you're talking about is covered in the section "managing slack" page 19.

It'll give you a lot of other ideas about using the Hitchclimber, worth a read.

There are many arborist shops about honey brothers and gusthearts are very popular and have a large selection of equipment. Most people start out climbing on a Prussick or Blake's hitch friction knot. I would get at least 3 Prussick loops, 5 three way locking crabs, 35m of 13mm arborist line XTC is good for beginners and many climbers still use XTC it is fairly popular rope. Get it spliced in one end. You'll also want to consider a 5m lanyard as your secondary line. You will most likely get taught the end on end method if you were to do your climbing tickets. You'll also want a harness there are many to choose from and vary in price but they are defiantly a matter of preference as to which you choose. I would try on all the ones in your budget and choose the most comfortable one for you. A throw bag and throw line are also a very useful and often underrated tool to any climbing arborist. Don't forget a helmet. Other people may have other reccomendations but that should get you started
