CSCS cards.

Does anyone know if its a legal requirement to have one while working on a construction site?

 

We have always got away with it (even working for the big boys) by saying we are exempt blagity blag blah blah blah NPTC card look.

 

Now are we? or have we just been lucky?

If we do need one what on earth are they for?

 

As we all know H&S is getting tighter and tighter it seems that no one wants you to do a decent days work anymore

Just been through this myself. Been on construction sites for years and some know the form others don't.

 

Arboriculture /tree surgery is NOT construction, therefore you don't need cic or cscs or whatever they are called now.

 

Site clearance is construction.

 

However felling trees using tree surgery methods and taking care not to damage retained trees is not site clearance. As long as you don't use a jcb to clear stumps etc as part of your work then it should be ok.

 

If another contractor comes along behind with jcb then thats fine he must be cis/cscs.

 

Make out invoices as tree work, even if it is a bit like site clearance.

 

Its best to make sure they will pay you in this way before you start.

It all depends who you are working for, some will insist on it and won't let anyone who doesn't have it on site.

Its straightforward to get, online application form, date at local test centre to do touchscreen multiple test on very basic H&S (takes 20 mins) and then a photo with your pass certificate.

I think its less than a hundred quid with the registration but not sure.

Had to get my cscs few years back, for one site, no cscs no pay simple as that. havent had to produce it since. I think at that time there was bit of purge on these things, now it may be relaxed due to recession.

is that the card regarding your tax, if so just tell them to put a letter with your cheque saying that they are not liable for your tax contributions, and sign it.

Is CSCS a safety thingy then? I'm thinking of the CIS scheme which is more of a tax issue.

cscs /site safety passport are construction trades indicator of training & also aimed toward H&S to reduce incidents on sites . our nptc/ city & guilds competancys are industry specific nvq2 & are therefore usually taken as better than those.

 

ime its dependant on the main contractor risk manager as to what they will / wont accept, however if you inform them of the content inc risk/hazard awareness & management.

 

some construction companys arent even aware of the existance of NPTC,

CSCS is a skills registration card/cert

CIS is the construction industry tax scheme, where employers ( main contractor) must deduct 20% flat rate for all labour supplied by sub contractors if they are registered. Those that are not registered get a 30% reduction.
