Looking for hardwood in Northern Ireland

Hi Guys,

I'm pretty new to this site but really enjoy the banter!

Can anyone advise me of anyone who could supply me a full load of hardwood in Northern Ireland? Or point me in the right direction.

I would ideally like an full artic size load but would consider smaller.

This is just for my own personal use so i also would like some advice on storage.

I was considering purchasing vented log bags for storage. I have a forklift to use where the logs will be stored. Can anyone advise how many 100/100/100 cm vented bags i would require for a 25 ton load?

I would appreciate some advice as to best place to purchase these vented bags

Also, after reading the posts regarding storage, would vented bags stacked on pallets in an open faced barn be my best way forward?

last thing, should i consider softwood as its a multi fuel stove i will be using it

in?

Thanks in advance and go easy if i haven't used the correct lingo !!

About 30-40 - there is lots of chat in previous threads on this subject

I would appreciate some advice as to best place to purchase these vented bags

Search on e-bay or previous threads here - we used a place in penrith but last time I wanted some the minimum order was 100 so no good

No the bestway forward is to stack the timber in a long narrow open stack with lots of airspaces to let the wind through, vented bags stacked on pallets are much less hassle and a perfectly good approach, open faced barn is good, open on two sides is better

Of course you should consider softwood - the important thing is moisture content - dry softwood greatly preferable to wet hardwood

Thanks in advance and go easy if i haven't used the correct lingo !!

Cheers

If you have a processor, then vented bags are probably the best bet. If not, I would cut my load into 1.2m lengths and split everything into billets, stack on pallets and tarp cover everything outside. A year down the line, a pallet or two of billets can be fork lifted into the barn for cross cutting and storage as you need it.

I would consider softwood also, will probably be easier and cheaper to source.

I only got softwood, which is excellent in closed appliances/stoves/boilers.

However I have still not got a way paved into the moss, therefore at the moment not making much headway stockpiling stock.

At least at the moment the value is increasing each year.

Lazyitis is also a re-occurring problem, between walking the dogs and satisfying the mrs.

OH and a full time job forby.

sds,

here is the way i dry store logs. I use pallets on ground and 4ft high, and as dividers. It is a sunny part of the yard also, strong breeze also. At 6 months, 14% moisture content. Cheap. Tarp can sweat timber.

Its for my own use.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the info guys.

Gareth, it might make sense to buy off gumtree but i quite like the idea of cutting my own stuff. Maybe madness!! but i would get job satisfaction out of it.

Difflock - when do you think you could supply me with a load>? Have you anyone who could transport?

With regards storage, vented bags are still my choice as i cant store all wood at my own house so need to transport and bags means no double handling. But thanks for the pic i will keep it in mind as i do have some apple boxes.

Cheers

Mine currently all processed and under cover for our own use, I intend to keep a few winters worth in reserve in case of my possible future ill health or piss poor weather, or whatever.

I intend to sell, when/if ever I start:blushing:, 1.0m lengths in nominally round 1.0m2 bundles. So each bundle 1.0m3.

They should season better than bags, be mechanically handleable and allow those such as yourself the satisfaction of cutting your own firewood:thumbup1:

Does this sound like a plan?

Still got to figger a fair price though:001_tongue:

Your idea seems a good one. At 1m lengths people would be able to take away in a car or trailer and process at home. You would do well on gumtree with that one.

The fact that i have the equipment to handle a heavier load I was hoping to keep cost down and purchase a raw product and hopefully get it as cheap as possible.

Thanks for your input and i do think your idea is a winner

Can anyone else recommend someone who would have an lorry load in Northern Ireland????
