So there are species whose roots graft naturally.

 

Which begs the question whether removing girdling roots from those species is wise or warranted?

Saw this today and thought of this thread.

 

Multi stemmed oak with partial failure.

 

The root is from a hornbeam next to it. Is it possible the girdling caused the rot and failure? Or more likely just an inevitable consequence of a hedge that's "got away" forty or so years ago with structurally unsound trees.

Metasequoia that's done the job itself and forced the girdler to snap at its weakest point......
