Small scale kindling

How do people make their kindling if they don't have a proper bit of kit?

 

Is there a better way than a nice straight, knot-less bit of pop and a hatchet?

 

Am I missing a trick here ?

Using a jigsaw to cut the pallet up, then a chopsaw to get the right length then last of all a hatchet to kindlerize it!! Lol

I get off cuts from a sawmill that makes pallets from pop and douglas fir, they pile up all the off cuts and waste. I buy it for 10 euros a cube, and try to pick the stuff allready cut to the correct length if possible. split with a billhook or hatchet.

When we make up some it's the way show in normandylumberjack's vid clip or put a bunji cord around a suitable log and axe.

Has anyone used one of these? The idea seems sound, the offset converts some of the kinetic energy into a sideways force and the piece at the rear stops the axe following through.

Think a bungee might be the way forward for me, never seem to get the right amount to pack the tyre out properly

Best way is pallets, strip off the boards, run them through a chopsaw to get them all equal lengths. The chopsaw will speed up the operation, then use a small hatchet to chop each cut off into 4 or 5 pieces. That seems to be the best way to do small scale kindling.

 

The only way I can think to improve it is if a manual piece of equipment could be fabricated to do the work of the hatchet more quickly, or at least chop more cut offs in the one move, any ideas??

Do you strip the boards and remove the nails or cut around them?

 

Last time I dismantled a pallet it was hassle .

Remove the nails, but if there are any akward ones then i resort to cutting
