Taking a chainsaw on a plane

I have been asked to help a mate out pruning some trees at their place in Italy, I will need to take my top handled saw out with me.

Has anyone taken a saw on a flight before?

I was thinking at least it will require draining all the fuel and taking the bar and chain off, and putting as a checked baggage.

Anyone got any advice or heard of saws getting confiscated by security?

Drain the fuel and oil,leave it to sit for a day to get the fumes out.

Just call up the airline ans ask. It might need boxing p but so long as it goes in the hold rather than carry on I don't think there is much of an issue.

I have done it a few times (BA and Flybe flights), as stated above drain and pack.

don't fly ryanair i was gonna take mine out to finland last summer called and asked they wanted some asshole fee as it was hazardous blah blah, reckon i'd of been ok if i'd not told them but didn't risk it so stuggled on with the clearing saws we were provided with no fun on 8" - 10" thinning work

Just thought I would update the post having now been and come back.

Flew Ryanair. drained all fuel and oil, and gave the saw a bit of a clean before packing. Took the spark plug out and let it air for a bit.

Packed in checked luggage. No problems either end.

I went to monaco last month with easy jet, took 660 and top handle, just drained the tanks and left them open for a while, had no issues.

Bringing a 357 from Birmingham to Belfast next Sunday, hopefully. Will follow all advice already given on this thread... drain, breathe, clean, etc...

Anyone lost a chainsaw at an airport in the decade since this thread was last current?
