Early morning fell

I am just off in 20 mins to fell a couple of trees in a shopping centre. Its the only safe time to do it as there are people around from 8 in the morning till 11 at night. Nearest house is 200m away. I am now beginning to think I should have let local plod know in case they get phone calls.

What do you think?

I dont own a silky unfortunately. The jobs done. Fired up the saw at 07.15, both trees on the deck for 07.30 with an hour spent cutting them up and dragging the brash to some piles for disposal. Main trunks and thicker branches cut for the stove logpile and I am sitting here having a cup of coffee and a fag.

No complaints about the noise and the police would probably prefer to stay in their nice warm station.

I dont understand your fascination with the police on this.

I think you are over estimating the gravitas of your actions.

What laws were you breaking that the police coud charge you for?

I think the best you could expect woud be a visit from the councils noise abatement team.

Unfortunately not in my experience. I used to pick cherries, which meant scaring the birds off, which meant noise (birdscarers, shotguns etc). First day's scaring you could guarantee that the police would be called within under an hour, and would show up asking a lot of questions.

The whole thing was completely legal, and the owner of the orchard in question had even been taken to court over it and found to be acting perfectly legally. Irrespective of this, the public complain, the police visit, if you're lucky they are familiar with the relevant finer details of the specific laws that apply, if not you get to explain them. If they get it then great, if not then you temporarily do as they say and get to sort it out later.

Whichever way it goes, it takes time. Picking cherries, doesn't make much odds. Trying to get a tree down and cleared before the public show up, time is of the essence.

Again, in my experience it didn't make much odds whether you briefed the police or not - the general message doesn't always reach the individuals who respond to the call. As such, I would have been inclined to do as was done here. I've done the same with moving big stuff (40' boat most recently) and temporarily blocking the road for ten minutes. Once it's done, it's done, and there's nothing can be done about it. You get a handful of people to whom it's a minor inconvenience, but it would be just the same if you inform people as if you don't.

It's always easier to obtain forgiveness than permission!

I have had issues with the local planning dept and noise at my last workshop. The planners let Barrats build 100 houses on the site of an old factory which was in a designated industrial estate. The planners told me that they could close me down if one of the new residents complained about the noise at weekends. The fact that the workshops had been there for 40 years and with full planning rights as it was on a designated industrial estate had absolutely nothing to do with it. That is why I moved my workshop up to the other end of the town to a bigger industrial estate.

In the end plod didnt show up and as far as I know nobody has complained about the noise. Some people in my experience like to complain about the most trivial of issues just because they can, and are a pita to plod and council officials because there is plenty for them to do without investigating vexatious complaints, whilst remaining polite at all times. Personally if someone complained to me about a trivial issue such as a little bit of noise etc I would tell them where to stick it!"
