bats & bat boxes

got a midge prob in the yrd smome suggested putting bat boxes in as they part of ther diet ,what else do they eat,what type of boxes are some better than other etc

My father made one for us as we have lots of bats round here and it hasn't been used in the last 5 years. He even went to the trouble of sourcing rough sawn wood etc

 

I think it is just luck as to if they will find it!

Carefull. Once a box is up its up and can't be touched. Be wise where you put it.

Think about it carefully and take into account any changes you might be wanting to make in the yard.

Any of the schwegler boxes are good, bit pricey 2f or 2fn will do the job for you. might be easier to make them with a simple bat box design but used untreated timber.

 

Its coming to end of season really but get them in now and you might be lucky for next year, also bear in mind that in order to check them you will need to be qualified or have someone with you that is.

 

The other thing i would say is contact your local bat group they would probably more than happy to come out and offer you some advice on siting and boxes for your yard.
