Buzzard like confettie !

Walking round a stubble field today with my spaniel . Partridge being shot a short way away . ( still to hot for game shooting to my thinking ) I hear the familiar "mewing" call of the buzzard . I look up and count 18 spiraling around above me . Is it me or are they on the increase ? I live at the foot of the south downs by the way .

They have definitely increased their numbers around here! Can be a nuisance in winter when they sit in the middle of the road eating roadkill

Thirty years ago we were on the edge of their range in the Midlands. Occasional young birds at this time of year was all we saw but in the last ten years there isn't a village where you can't see them.

 

I think at this time of year you see a lot of young birds being pushed out to find new territories.

On a serious note though, I know they cause a lot of damage and deaths to game birds but.....WOW! what beautiful birds they really are and to see 18 in one go.......pah! Amazing....

In my area they must of quadrupled in the last 3 years , lots of red kites as well, i think the time will come when the buzzards have to be culled to a sensible population. When i was growing up i never saw a bird of prey in the wild and think its great that the skies are full of them.

Totally agree, just starting to see Buzzards and Kites round my neck of the woods - nature has a funny way of controlling numbers by controlling their food - they hunt and eat, their sources of food dwindles, their numbers reduce - thats how it works unless man gets involved......and fooks it all up:001_rolleyes:
