What is a good first ground saw ??

What about a sea saw or a cold saw ? No seriously 550/560 if you have the dosh . Good alternative would be second hand 346/357 and pay spud to port it . Again you would not be dissapointed .

 

a ported saw for an apprentise? hmm i think a standard 346xp would do to be honest. espesh for a rookie

For a first ground saw, based on only having one saw and therefore needing it to be pretty bombproof too, I'd have a look at something like a 365.

 

It's heavier than anything else mentioned but it's not particularly lively and will if need be pull a biggish bar for an odd occasion. I'd shove a 15" on it for most stuff and have an 18/20" sat there for when needed.

 

You can always upgrade later and the 365 would make a good all rounder spare saw (you can never have too many saws!)

 

I'd have thought a 50cc saw would soon get tiresome unless you're only on smaller garden trees, and you can still cut small stuff with a bigger saw.

 

550/560 are great though :001_smile:
