Large oak to mill

Hi

I am having a large oak taken down which is far too big for the woodmizer. It is down to the first fork, and the branches are 40- 50". The trunk is about 6ft at the base. I am hoping the trunk will be good inside, but the branches look pretty good, and I would like to do them through and through with some nice forks.

Is there an Alaskan that will do 60-70"? Is anyone in the surrey area that would mill on site into 2 1/4 and 3" slabs? and if so how much?

Thank you

Alex

That's a big old lump of wood!

Really you need a pretty monster set up for something like that.... if it's 6ft then a 7ft bar wouldn't do it you'd need an 84" bar or even something like a large double ended setup with a powerhead at each end...

I've got some 72" double ended bars here but that's their length in total - they would mill around 56" wide... you can use these with an 880 and a helper handle with roller on the other end or x2 880 mount chainsaws. This would be more practical but you'd have to trim the sides down a bit.

You could send it to Helmdon Sawmills in Northamptonshire (not sure where you are though). He's cheap as chips for milling, and will accurately quarter saw it. I would be surprised if sending it to him, milling it and hauling it back was more expensive than milling it on site.

Looks a touch shy of 6ft in diameter (say 5.5 at mid point). Hoppus measurement of 187 cubic foot, which would equate to a touch shy of 7 tonnes.

Send it to Helmdon. It's 87 miles from Guildford. Hire a HIAB truck and operator for a day (£52.50 an hour plus VAT in these parts for an 8 wheeler that would lift that. They could take it up, wait a few hours for Steve to mill it (you'd need to book ahead to check he could do it at short notice) and bring the boards back. He's about £1.50 a cubic foot including VAT for milling, so you'd only be £800 out of pocket for nearly 200 cubic foot of very nice oak.
