I've very happy with my Giant Talon 1. A new one i think would be over budget but you can pick them up on ebay for your budget.

If only £300 I would look for secondhand. Mountain biking is quite fashion orientated so older models get sold on quite cheap. My current bike was 3 years old, almost as new condition and was less than half the new price.

Paid £400 for a 2 yr old Commencal Supernormal - cracking bike, fantastic condition, £1200 new! The lad was selling to fund an upgrade. For £300, I would definitely be looking secondhand, not new, to get something really decent.

As the others say £300 might get something that's ok but secondhand, it's usually the components that are of poor quality on an ok frame. You should look on the bay or local paper. If you want a new bike that decent then it's gonna be £600 minimum.

Go Retro, something like a ti dynatech diablo; loads on retrobike. Or new go ti rather than carbon imo.

 

Retro stuff has character and elegance; alot of modern carbon is mass mass mass produced... dull dull dulll...

you know me though I might have to forget a mountain bike and go for a uni-cycle
