We got a squeak on our defender and we had one on our discovery. It is either a sticky pulley or the tensioner is on its way out. but as for the glowing light the alternator is gonna go fairly soon. Does your rev needle flicker at high revs?

Cheers mate, will look into it.:thumbup1:

try to spray the back of each pulley in turn with wd40 with engine running, when it stops squeaking you know which one needs some engine oil squirting on it. yes walk.. or take the van, or bike, usually takes a day or two as he has to order parts.

seriously is that the way to stop the squeeking???

Ill get the alternator sorted round here, there is a drop off and pick up place that charges about £60 for a refurb.:thumbup1:

It'll stop the squeaking for about 5 mins. If the bearings on the tensioner pulley are going (like on ours) it wont make much difference. The alternator is a job you can do at home, the tensioner pulley isnt as its a steel bolt going into an alloy head so if you cross thread it then its game over. We changed the alternator on the discovery at home as the thing wasnt worth refurbing. There is meant to be a slight gap between the coil and the magnet the gap on ours was full of hard baked clay so not much use to charge the battery and lights.

Right I will spray some wd40 2moro and let you know what I find. Cheers guys.

Anything else to look out for???

boot floor, inner wings, leaky sunroofs/alpine windows, door locks, sills, electric window relays, if it hasn't been off road in a while then it might stick in difflock, that'll do for now..

If its fuel injected check for any leakage around the block where they go in. We had a couple of issues with them working looose but it wasn't squirting fuel everyhwere. Another thing to look out for is leaking from the transfer/gearbox area. We have a small leak on our defender but it has seemed to have stopped. Also check the ball joints on the front axle for grooves caused by stones they can eventually become cracks. but it does take a long time for them to become cracks.

Yeah, remote central door locks and leccy windows are erm...............quirky:lol:, but I can fix them.

I have peeled all carpets and know where all rust is.

Its more the mechanical side im worried about.
