This is the very first production Land Rover, chassis number R860001. It was registered as HUE 477. It was sold in the 50's to a farmer in a small valley. In 1970 it changed hands again for the pricey sum of 15 Pounds. In 1995 it was discovered by a small bunch of Series I buffs but it took until 1999 to show it to the public. The present owner, David Fairless, intends to restore it to original condition by keeping as much of the old parts as possible.

I think the difference between production landrover and oldest landrover makes all the difference.

Sounds like you are more of a landy boff than me:001_tt1:

 

Is there some history i have read somewhere about the really early landys that had the steering wheel in the center? Just going from memory here(the grey matter is not my strong point), but wasnt the center seated one from the days when the market was as an agricultural vehicle that could run on the road?

 

Oh, and i believe there was even a 2WD one!

yeah the 2wd one was commissioned by the military for parade ect-they thought itd cut costs over 4wd, but to make them 2wd, new front axle ect, in the small volumes anticipated, cost far more than standard 4wd!

the centre steer was the original protype designed by the wilkes brothers so that it could be sold anywhere in the world without having to create seperate jigs as money was very tight at the rover company after the war which is why they built the bodies out of ally and the landy was only intended as a stopgap model to allow rover to get on its feet again but it proved so polpular it has stayed in production.
