How common are these? Seen plenty of wood wasps before but not one of these.

dont see them very often bout once or twice a year when its hot.

 

theres a few big wood wasps like this one, give you a fright if they fly in on your peripheral vision!

Yes, it's Rhyssa persuasoria. Handsome beasts, often seen around stacked softwood.

wood wasps dont sting you!

Believe me, an orange Ichneumon wasp stung the back of my knee. That or it bit, but it hurt, and I squished it... (I was 17)

 

I remember it being an Ichneumon wasp because I had to look it up...
