Land Rover Modifications Insurance Renewal

Alright guys,

Just renewed my insurance for next month and the company wanted some pictures of my land rover, so fair enough sent them off and I guessed from the beginning that they would ask about the modifications, but to be honest I dont mind having to pay a little extra knowing im totally covered then.

But this is what really annoyed me, I received a letter back asking about the modifications, they now want a detailed list of all the changes, thats fine im happy to do that, but the letter also said that the increased charge would be £101.04, i really cannot see how they can make a figure up like that before they know exactly what modifications are on there?

i know its stupid, but i can see the logic behind it too, i had a head on crash with an car 2 years ago, and because of the winch the car was a right off, luckily my insurance never asked any questions

i just really dont get how they make a random figure up...

I thought winches were not classed as a mod. Things that change to performance or ad value are important.

Bigger tyres, better air kit, snorkel, different engine, etc etc etc.

Add a big expensive high end alarm and they lower the price.

Ins companies now know they can get away with charging what they like as the law has now changed and they know how to make money from you.

You will prob find the extra cost without giving them a list will be for admin fees for doing the paperwork.

They aren't interested in the few quid the value of a winch adds, what's much more important to them is how much damage to others you can do.

Taking the winch as an example and Aces example of writing off a car with a winch bumper, the cost of a winch is peanuts, the cost of crippling someone with a winch on an accident is in the hundreds of thousands.

I haven't made any mods to any of the Landys I've owned, on the grounds that I don't think I'm a better engineer than the boys at Land Rover:001_tt2:

They count all sorts as modification, winch, bull bars, A bars, steering guards and the like

It all gives them wriggle room for not paying so best to tell them about evrything.
