Hi,

 

A mate inherited a mixed ~30 acre field/wood in Cobham in Surrey that has some old oak, some pine and silver birch etc ..~300 trees

 

..but the wood has had no management ...probably ever !

 

Is there any free advice out there on how best to manage it ... me and him are happy to do the work and manage it going foward but wanted to blag some free/cheap advice for starters.

It might be worth him joining the small woods association, and giving them a ring as they may have someone locally that could come out for a look.

Ask http://www.surreyhills.org You're exactly the kind of person they're looking for, especially the guy specialising in PAWS (Plantations In Ancient Woodland). He's on here but I can't remember his moniker.

 

And yes, there is free advice available.

You can get a grant from the forestry comission for someone to come out, asses your woods and draw up a management plan. Part of woodland improvement grant.
