Help with this tree ID please

Having a very blank moment and it's doing my head in thinking of what this is so over to the experts.....

Looks like some sort of Quercus, lucombe oak perhaps? But are those berries I can't quite work it out from the pics

Hi Rob, I wondered if you'd be on-line. They are berries almost blackcurrant like. the tree was massive probably 24m with a 2.5m [email protected]. The leaves are serrated and the berries look so like a blackcurrant it is surreal. I thought of a Tupelo but the leaves are smooth on those if my memory serves me right. It's definitely NOT a Lucombe as there were lots of those in an avenue of oaks of many species. I thought a species of Nettle tree but again the leaves look wrong UNLESS these are immature and they get smoother as time progresses?

Only thing I can think of at the mo would be a Celtis sp. or Phillyrea sp.

not \ sorbus then? Tormenalis?

No definitely not, sorbus torminalis has a very distinct lobed lead that is unmistakeable

The leaf shape looks like Sorbus x intermedia, but that has orange/red fruit and wouldn't generally grow to the height of your tree.

 

Have you got any better pictures? One of the whole tree? A clearer one of the fruit?

Is this not 'just' cerris with the gooseberry galls of Andricus grossulariae

Somebody please figure this one out, it's doing my head in. Half an hour on I have eliminated lots of things but still don't have any ideas.

Just read DH post, sounds good to me but maybe on x hispanica rather than cerris.
